Microwave processing of materials

Description

The course is intended to provide the basics of dielectric heating, focussing on microwave heating applications. The basic equations governing dielectric heating will be presented, in order to understand the peculiarities (selectivity, volumetric heating) of this electroheat technique. A short review of the main components of a microwave system for material processing will be followed by considerations regarding the advent of solid state generators and how they can be used to improve heating efficiency or homogeneity. The role of numerical simulation will be addressed as well, showing how state of the art EM software is capable of dramatically reduce time to market. Case studies involving ceramic and metallic materials will be presented.
